Carlo spending limit: how it works and annual reset

Every year, on April 1st, the Carlo spending limit counters are reset for all users holding a Carlo account for the Principality of Monaco. This page explains in detail how this limit works and its impact on your use of Carlo.

1. What is the Carlo spending limit?

Carlo is the payment application that rewards users for their local purchases in the Principality of Monaco. It allows you to benefit from 5% cashback when making purchases at merchants partnering with the program. In order to ensure a fair and sustainable operation of the system, an annual spending limit is applied per store. This limit is set at:

€3,000 in spending per partner merchant

Reference period: from April 1st to March 31st inclusive

Current period: April 1st, 2025 to March 31st, 2026

Next period: April 1st, 2026 to March 31st, 2027

This limit is calculated individually for each partner merchant. This means that your spending at one merchant has no impact on your limit at another merchant.

2. What happens once the limit is reached?

When you reach the €3,000 spending limit at a given partner merchant, the use of Carlo is suspended at that merchant for the remainder of the current annual period. In practice:

  • You can no longer use Carlo at that specific merchant until March 31st inclusive
  • You continue to earn cashback at all other partner merchants where you have not reached the limit

Example

Merchants Spending (2025-2026) Carlo Status
Merchants A 3 000 € (limit reached) Suspended until April 1st, 2026
Merchants B 1 200 € Cashback active (€1,800 in remaining spending)
Merchants C 0 € Cashback active (€3,000 in remaining spending)

The annual reset: every April 1st

Every year, on March 31st at midnight, all spending counters are reset for all Carlo users. This operation applies to all partner merchants, without exception. This means that:
  • All limits reset to zero, regardless of the amount spent during the previous period.
  • Users whose limit had been reached at one or more merchants can once again use Carlo at those establishments from April 1st.
  • A new annual period of €3,000 per merchant starts for all users.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to take any steps to have my limit reset?

No. The reset is entirely automatic. On March 31st at midnight, all counters are reset without any action on your part.

Can I still make purchases at a merchant where I have reached my limit?

Yes, but not with the Carlo application.

Is my limit at other merchants affected?

No. Each merchant has its own counter, completely independent. Reaching the limit at one of them has no impact on your access to cashback at other Carlo partners.

Does this limit apply in all cities where Carlo is present?

No. The €3,000 spending limit per merchant is a rule specific to Monaco.
